There is a lot of information these days about what kind of
pet food you should feed your pets and why. Thankfully, the
trend is moving
toward
healthy, natural pet foods. One theory that is gaining popularity
recommends customizing a dog's protein source based on breed
and geographic ancestry. In other words, Siberian Huskies evolved
from a cold climate and a high fat diet including fish may
be most appropriate, whereas a Beagle is likely to thrive more
on lamb, rabbit, and chicken.
The woman behind this theory is Kate Solisti,
author of "The
Holistic Animal Handbook, A Guidebook to Nutrition, Health,
and Communication" (Dec 2004). Solisti makes a compelling
argument for discriminating against certain protein sources
based on breed and how a breed-specific diet can be the key
to good health.
To take advantage of this type of holistic
dog food regimen,
read up on your dog’s breed and learn which foods the
people local to your dog’s ancestral region hunted, grew
or raised before the age of supermarkets. This will help narrow
down
meat sources
to avoid and the meats he will thrive on. One book recommended
for this type of research is William D. Cusick’s "Canine
Nutrition: Choosing the Best Foods for Your Breed" (Sep
1997).
We have always chosen to manufacture our raw
dog food without meat because 1) including
meat in a pet food requires cooking and preservatives (two
things we feel it is best to
avoid), and 2) we are committed to providing people the opportunity
to customize their dog food to best meet individual
needs. This allows you to select the quality of meat you’re
looking for and take advantage of breed-specific nutrition
and customization for age, weight, and dog
health problems.
