If you are like me, you were alarmed to read about the recent
pet food recall by Diamond Pet Foods. According to the MSNBC
article (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10771943/), the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration reported that at least 76 dogs
nationwide are believed to have died as a result of eating
contaminated pet food. The company has recalled 19 varieties
of dog and cat food because tests showed high levels of aflatoxin,
a naturally-occurring
toxic chemical that comes from a fungus found on corn and other
grains and causes severe liver damage in animals.
When you heard that the recall was due to contaminated corn,
you may have begun to wonder, “ Gosh, my dog eats Sojos,
which has corn! Is she going to get dog
health problems those
other dogs?”
We would like to take this opportunity to put you at ease about
our ingredient standards that we live by at Sojourner Farms.
First, there is a huge difference between feed-grade corn used
in many pet foods (which comes from corn deemed not safe for
human consumption) and the human-grade corn that we use in
our natural dog food and all
natural dog treats. Sojourner Farms purchases corn from a human-grade
agricultural facility
required to test each lot for aflatoxins in accordance with
FDA recommendations. Furthermore, we make batches of pet food
daily, so you don’t have to worry about our corn sitting
in a warehouse for months on end waiting to wind up in your
pet's food. Because we are advocates of raw
dog food, freshness
is our highest priority when making your dog food.
We hope that this story serves as a wake-up call to all pet
food manufacturers that not only are fresh, human-grade ingredients
the most healthy and nutritious way to feed pets -- but they're
also the safest means to feed our beloved companion animals.
