It’s no secret we care what our pets eat, which is why there’s much debate among animal professionals, pet parents and nutrition experts about feeding avocado to dogs.
Here’s what the ASPCAhas to say: “Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark may contain a toxic principle known as ‘persin.’ While avocado is toxic to some animals, in dogs and cats, we do not expect to see serious signs of illness….Avocado is sometimes included in pet foods for nutritional benefit. We would generally not expect avocado meal or oil present in commercial pet foods to pose a hazard to dogs and cats.”
In other words, keep the peel, pit and leaves away from your pooch, but he can still reap the nutritional benefits of eating this fruit.
The Pet Poison Helplineshares a similar insight: “Despite the rumors, avocado is not poisonous to dogs, nor likely to cats.”
If you’re concerned about adding some avocado to your pup’s diet, check with your holistic veterinarian. And, as with anything you feed your four-legged friend, moderation is key. Here are some reasons you should consider adding a little avocado to your pet’s freeze-dried or dehydrated dog food:
Avocados provide healthy fats
Healthy fat is essential to your dog’s diet and avocado is rich in monounsaturated (good!) fat. This helps with overall heart health and supports your pup’s blood pressure and blood cell formation.
Avocados can bulk up your skinny pooch
If Fido needs to gain a few pounds, supplementing his diet with avocado is one of the best ways you can help him add weight. Nutrients found in avocados regulate metabolism and help muscles grow and develop.
Avocados can make coats healthy
The essential oils found in avocados contribute to the health of your pup’s skin and fur.Not only can these oils strengthen, grow and improve the look of his fur, but they can also help ease skin irritation. If your pooch suffers allergies, or other skin problems, adding oil-rich avocado to his diet can help.
If you’re looking for a multi-faceted treat to add to your pup’s meal, consider all the benefits avocado offers your furry friend. As always, check with your holistic vet before making any changes to your dog’s diet.
